How to Apply
Are you interested in working with the IATSE 873?
You can do so by applying as a Permit.
If you are already an experienced professional in the industry and are looking to apply as a Member of the IATSE 873, you must complete the Permit application process in order to eventually apply for Membership.
You must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
PLEASE READ THIS PAGE IN FULL BEFORE APPLYING.
If you have further questions after reading the information below, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page under the "About IATSE 873" tab.
At the IATSE Local 873, our goal is to supply each production in Toronto with the most skilled and experienced film technicians available in the industry. If you believe you have what it takes and would like to join the IATSE 873, your first step is to apply for Permit status.
An IATSE 873 Permit is someone who is working towards becoming a Member by providing invaluable support and backup to the Membership during our busiest periods.
All applicants who are interested in Permit status MUST submit an online application.
Printed copies of applications will not be accepted at the office.
If you are already an active permit with IATSE 873, you can apply for Membership.
APPLYING FOR PERMIT STATUS
- Please apply to ONE Department. Do not submit a second application for another department; you will be duplicated in our system and your application will take longer to be reviewed.
- ATTENTION: If you are already an active Permit wanting to add another Department, please review the minimum requirements below for your preferred department and then visit our Frequently Asked Questions page and go to section 2. Permit Application Questions to find out how to proceed.
For your department of choice, please review the minimum requirements and required kit (where applicable):

The permit application consists of two steps:
Step 1 - Create Your Account

Fill out your personal information correctly, including capitalizing where necessary.
When selecting a Department to apply to, please be aware that the IATSE 873 does not offer a training course for applicants to learn the skills of a trade. You must be experienced.
After creating your account, you will receive an e-mail that will allow you to set up a password and gain access to our website. Please check both your inbox and junk mail folders for the e-mail. To continue to Step 2, you will be required to log in to your account.
Step 2 - Certifications
After logging in to your account, you will be prompted to submit any certifications that you have, including those that are mandatory requirements for your selected department. If you do not meet the mandatory requirements, the system will not allow you to submit your application; at this point, you can "Save" your application while you seek to obtain those certifications.
The IATSE 873 offers training courses instructed by its own members who have been certified to train by the Workers Health and Safety Centre. We also accept training certifications from other schools and safety training centres. We do not accept online training certifications for any safety tickets (WHMIS and Health & Safety Awareness excepted). If you would like to obtain your training through the IATSE 873, please, when logged in, visit the Events Calendar under the My873 tab to sign up for an available course. You will be required to make your payment online.
We offer the following training courses:
- Elevating Work Platforms Operator: Scissor Lift and Boom Lift
- Propane ROT
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods
- Working at Heights
Please note that there are mandatory health and safety courses available from the Ministry of Labour that are available to be taken online free of charge:
Any courses that are available to sign up for can be found listed on the Events Calendar. If the course you are looking for cannot be found, it simply means that we do not have any dates scheduled at the moment. Please check back at a later time.
- Once you are able to provide all mandatory requirements, submit your application for review.
The speed of the review process is dependent upon our need for new permits in your department as well as your qualifications. When it is busy and we are in need of technicians, the most qualified technicians will be contacted first.
We thank you for your interest in becoming a permit with the IATSE 873, however only those who are qualified will be invited to become a permit.
- Upon review of your application, you will be contacted through e-mail.
Applicants who are invited to join our permit list will be required to attend our Toronto Film Industry Orientation Workshop (TFIOW). This online workshop is mandatory for all applicants and is an introduction to the working environment of technicians in the Toronto film industry. It covers all aspects of union policies, on-set protocol, health and safety issues, our call system, and much more. Successful completion of this workshop is mandatory for permit status. The course cost is $100.00.
Important: You can only attend this workshop if you have been invited. Do not contact the office to sign up unless you have received an email indicating that you were invited.
We are not accepting permit applications at this time. Please check back in early 2022 for any changes.
